Coilovers vs. Lowering Springs: Which Is Right for Your Build?

One of the most common questions we get at Project JDM is: should I go coilovers or lowering springs? Both will drop your car. Both will improve the stance. But they're very different products, and the right choice depends on your budget, your build goals, and how you use your car.
Lowering Springs
Lowering springs replace your factory springs with shorter, stiffer units. They're a direct bolt-on with your existing struts and shocks — no other hardware needed. This makes them the most affordable way to lower your car.
Pros: Affordable ($150–$300 for quality brands like D2 Racing), straightforward installation, mild improvement in handling, and a 1–2 inch drop that looks great without going extreme.
Cons: You can't adjust ride height after installation. Your existing shocks were designed for factory spring rates — they'll wear faster when paired with stiffer lowering springs. And if you want to go lower or higher later, you're buying new springs again.
Lowering springs are ideal for: daily drivers who want a cleaner stance without a major investment, or anyone just getting into the game who wants to see what lowered life is like.
Coilovers
Coilovers replace your entire strut/shock assembly with a single adjustable unit. The spring and damper are integrated, and ride height is set by threading the lower mount up or down. Quality coilovers also offer damper adjustment — you can tune how firm or soft the ride is.
Pros: Full ride height adjustability (usually 1–4 inches of range), better handling characteristics, longer lifespan, and the ability to dial in exactly the look and feel you want. Brands like BC Racing and D2 Racing offer excellent street coilovers at $800–$1,400.
Cons: Higher upfront cost. Installation is more involved. And if you go too low on NYC streets, you'll be scraping everything.
Coilovers are ideal for: anyone serious about their build, show cars, track days, or anyone who wants full control over their ride height and handling.
Our Recommendation
If you're on a budget and just want to drop your daily driver — go lowering springs. If you're building something you're proud of and want to dial it in properly — go coilovers. We carry D2 Racing and BC Racing coilovers at Project JDM, and we can install them same day. Contact us or stop by 77-23 Queens Blvd to talk through the right setup for your car.
